Shalimar Bagh Mughal Garden is a magnificent historical garden located in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Built during the Mughal era, it is a testament to the exquisite beauty and architectural finesse of that time.

Garden was commissioned by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife, Empress Noor Jahan, in the year 1619. It was designed to be a symbol of their eternal love and to serve as a retreat for the royal couple. Shalimar Bagh is spread across an area of approximately 31 acres and is divided into three terraces, each with its unique charm and features.
First terrace, known as the Diwan-e-Aam, was originally meant for the emperor to hold public meetings and address his subjects. It is adorned with beautiful fountains, pavilions, and colorful flowerbeds. Second terrace, known as the Diwan-e-Khas, was exclusively reserved for private gatherings and intimate moments. It features a stunning black marble pavilion, known as the Black Pavilion or the Baradari, which stands as a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the Mughal era.
Third and highest terrace, known as the Zenana garden, was exclusively meant for the royal ladies of the Mughal court. It is adorned with lush greenery, cascading fountains, and intricately designed pavilions. Central feature of this terrace is the mesmerizing black marble pavilion, known as the Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Breeze. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding gardens and the Dal Lake, creating a tranquil and serene atmosphere.
Shalimar Bagh welcomes visitors from 9 AM to 7 PM every day throughout the year. However, during the winter season, the garden may close a bit earlier, around 6 PM. This timing allows visitors ample opportunity to explore and appreciate the beauty of the garden during daylight hours. Whether you plan to visit in summer or winter, Shalimar Bagh offers a serene and captivating experience for all those who appreciate nature and history.
Entry fee for Shalimar Garden is quite reasonable, at only Rs. 24 per person. Best part is that there are no additional charges for photography, so you are free to bring your camera and capture all the mesmerizing sights and sounds of the garden. I have been fortunate enough to visit Shalimar Bagh on several occasions during my trips to Kashmir, and I can attest to the breathtaking beauty of the garden.
Shalimar Garden holds a remarkable place in history. Its construction dates back to 1619 when Emperor Jahangir had it built for his beloved wife Noor Jahan, and he called it ‘Farah Baksh’, meaning ‘the delightful’. Later, in 1630, Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the extension of the garden to Governor Zafar Khan, who renamed it ‘Faiz Baksh’, which translates to ‘the bountiful’ in English.
Majestic garden stands as a testament to the Mughal Empire’s rich cultural heritage, and it continues to be a popular tourist attraction today. Visitors can explore the intricate fountains, lush gardens, and stunning architecture that make Shalimar Garden a true work of art.
